Dr Brian Kirk   Technical & Professional Services (Senior), 3M

Dr Brian Kirk is qualified as a Pharmacist. His post graduate studies include a Masters Degree in Pharmaceutical Analysis and research into the application of computer technology for modelling steam sterilization processes and monitoring and controlling steam sterilizers.

He joined 3M Health Care in 1989 as a development scientist for sterilization products with a special responsibility for monitoring the development of National and European standards relating to sterilization. During his time with 3M he has held a number of additional responsibilities including European Technical service for sterilization supporting customers and business teams.

Brian is also a member of a number of BSI, CEN and ISO committees responsible for developing standards for chemical and biological sterilization indicators and steam sterilization processes. Brian has presented at a number of national and international conferences and is a registered Authorising Engineer (Decontamination).
 

Dr Jimmy Walker   Principal Investigator Decontamination, Health Protection Agency

Tom Brophy   Lead Medical Engineering Technologist, Barts and the London NHS Trust

 Tom Brophy currently leads the surgical instrument section at Barts and The London NHS Trust. He served a five year apprenticeship managed by the Worshipful Company of Master Cutlers of London and for 35 years has worked as a mechanical engineer, specialising in surgical instrument manufacture and quality. He has co-authored a number of papers regarding the quality of surgical instruments. His latest paper will be published in the Hospital Healthcare Europe in the near future.
For a number of years he has been raising awareness of the need to improve surgical instrument quality. This has included the following:

  • Working with various government organisations and the NHS supply chain.

  • Acting as an advisor and appearing on the BBC Panorama, ‘Surgery’s Dirty Secrets’, and ‘Scotland Investigates’.

  • Liaising with Professor Brian Toft, Professor of Patient Safety at Coventry University, who is currently in discussions with Simon Burns MP Minister for Health, discussing the issue of poor quality surgical instruments.

Stuart Line   Independent Consultant

Stuart Line is a semi-retired director of Sterilizer Consultants Ltd.  In addition to assisting customers with decontamination problems he is lead author of CFPP0106, covering the decontamination of flexible endoscopes.  He is a microbiologist and worked in a clinical laboratory of the Public Health Laboratory Service for 35 years.  On leaving laboratory work he became an Authorised Person (sterilizers) for 10 years.  Stuart has been a member of several British Standards committees, author and tutor on decontamination subjects.  Particular subjects studied include Low Temperature Steam Formaldehyde sterilization, laboratory sterilizers, low temperature steam disinfection, automatic instrument cleaning equipment, transportable sterilizers and flexible endoscopes. 

Daniel McAlonan   Head of Health & Safety, British Dental Association

Daniel is the British Dental Association’s Head of Health & Safety and advises BDA members throughout the UK on all areas of health and safety law including compliance with current infection control and decontamination requirements. He is also involved in formulating the BDA’s response to government consultations and the development of national infection control and decontamination guidelines for the dental profession.
