Dr Robert C Spencer

Dr Robert C Spencer MB BS MSc FRCPath FRCP[G] HonDipHic is a Consultant in Clinical & Environmental Microbiology at Index Microbiology.

Qualified 1970 at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School, University of London.

Post graduate experience at The Wright – Fleming Institute and Birkbeck College, London

Bob has recently retired after 45 years as a Medical Microbiologist. Over that time he has worked in senior positions within the National Health Service, Sheffield University [Reader], Public Health Laboratory Service, Health Protection Agency and Public Health England.

He has wide experience in prevention and control of healthcare associated infections and the decontamination of re-usable medical devices. Past Chairman of the Central Sterilising Club and the Hospital Infection Society and past President of the Institute of Decontamination Scientists [IDSc].

In addition Bob has wide experience and knowledge in dealing with medical treatment and counter-measures of asymmetric biological threats with especial regard to Bacillus anthracis. Also has an interest in the decontamination aspects of environmental contamination by such agents. Has worked with many government agencies in this respect.

Since his “retirement” Bob has involved himself with medical charities and NGO’s working in the Middle East with especial reference to medical device reprocessing in Gaza. He recently successfully completed a project on the management of Public Health Emergencies involving West Bank, Jordan and Israel.
