The setting for the evening will be on board HMS Warrior 1860 on the waterfront at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. HMS Warrior, Britain’s first iron-hulled armoured battleship, was launched in 1860 and was the pride of Queen Victoria’s fleet. Powered by steam and sail, she was the largest, fastest and most powerful warship of her day and had a lasting influence on naval architecture and design.

The evening will provide a fantastic opportunity to explore this engineering marvel and experience life on board. Attending the event will be local dignitaries, members of the Institute, specially invited guests and the IHEEM head office team.

Guests who are interested in touring the ship can board and enjoy an hour of free-flow around HMS Warrior including the Lower Decks which will close from 1930

Stay over and explore Portsmouth

If you are travelling from outside the city, then why not make a weekend of it and stay over and visit the variety of attractions that Portsmouth has to offer. Known as the ‘Great Waterfront City’, Portsmouth is the UK’s only island city and is an ideal place to visit for a short break. In addition to HMS Warrior, the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is home to Nelson’s HMS Victory and King Henry VIII’s Mary Rose Museum. Besides the wealth of maritime heritage on offer, Portsmouth is home to the Charles Dickens Birthplace Museum, the D-Day Story - the only designed museum in the UK to the D-Day landings, adjacent to Southsea Castle from where King Henry VIII saw his flagship, the Mary Rose sink.

Portsmouth has a stunning coastline aligned with shingle beaches, open parklands and marinas including the retail outlet of Gunwharf Quays, a few minutes’ walk from the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. If you are keen to explore Portsmouth, then you can reach for the sky at the iconic Spinnaker Tower and take in the views across the city, the Solent and across to the Isle of Wight, plus walk across the glass floor. With all this and more on offer in one small island, Portsmouth certainly is the Great Waterfront City.
