Dr Hugh Howorth

1975-1977 - Dr Hugh Howorth

Following the war, in which his father had died, Hugh did not return to university but instead took over the management of the family business, becoming Managing Director and Chairman of Howorth and Co, now known as Howorth Air Technology.

Probably his best remembered innovation however, was his solution to the problem of high infection rates in operating theatres in the 1960s. At the time hip replacement surgery was a highly fraught surgical technique with infection rates of 14 per cent. The solution of regulated airflows reduced this to less than half of 1 per cent.

In 1979 he was appointed OBE for his services to medicine, and in 1992 he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Science by Lancaster University.
