IHEEM Technical seminar

Tackling fire safety in healthcare premises requires partnership working between the healthcare facility, the Fire and Rescue Service and other key stakeholders.

To highlight the importance of this and to help address some of the key issues, the Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estate Management (IHEEM) has been working with The National Association of Healthcare Fire Officers (NAHFO) to develop a series of fire safety seminars. This is the fourth in a series of events being organised between IHEEM and NAHFO.

NAHFO is an organisation that acts as a national voice for all those associated with healthcare fire safety. It works closely with other organisations such as IHEEM to promote the highest standards of fire safety within healthcare environments.


Sessions featured include:

'Table Top, Fire Service Training and The Real Thing' - Peter Aldridge MSc, Head of Fire, Security and Corporate Affairs at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and is the Secretary to the National Association of Healthcare Fire Officers (NAHFO).

'Evacuation Strategies - Problems and Solutions Explained' - Alan Oliver MBA, Business Development and Compliance Manager at TagEvac 

  • The session will look at the different fire strategies, how and why they need to be tailored to an individual building, reasons why they sometimes fail and solutions.

'Preventing Repeat Fires in Hospitals - A Case Study' - Peter Blandon, Quality Manager at FirePro UK Ltd

  • A case study for the protection of hospital sterilisation machines from fire
  • The case study is based on real events and demonstrates how protection of mission critical hospital equipment can be protected at low cost using simple technology   


Fire seminar - Peter Aldridge

Peter Aldridge MSc who is the Head of Fire, Security and Corporate Affairs at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and is the Secretary to the National Association of Healthcare Fire Officers (NAHFO), will be one of the speakers at the event. Peter was in the RAF Fire and Rescue Service for 14 years, serving all over the world, prior to joining the Leeds Teaching Hospitals 16 years ago, as Fire Training Officer, then Fire Safety Manager before talking up his current role in April 2016. Peter is also Secretary to the National Association of Healthcare Fire Officers (NAHFO), has an MSc in Healthcare Governance and recently completed a Post Grad in NHS Leadership and Management.

Fire seminar - Phil Gibbs

Philip Gibbs MSc EngTech GIFireE is the Healthcare Partnerships Officer at London Fire Brigade. Philip joined the London Fire Brigade (LFB) in 2004 and worked as a Fire Safety Inspecting Officer in Camden for eight years. During this time he was the Hospital Liaison Officer for the Borough of Camden, which included several large hospitals and numerous healthcare facilities. After four more positions within LFB, Philip is now the full-time lead officer for healthcare fire safety within the Business Support Group. His duties include promoting and managing healthcare fire safety partnerships and managing the Hospital Team. The Hospital Team is a group of pan-London Inspecting Officers who have specialist knowledge, experience and training in healthcare fire safety. Philip has a Master’s degree in Healthcare Fire Safety Management from Loughborough University.

Fire seminar - Alan Oliver

Alan Oliver MBA is the Business Development and Compliance Manager at TagEvac. Alan has been involved in fire protection for more than 35 years, having joined Pilkington Insulations in 1981 as a regional manager in their fire protection division. In 1991 Alan established a Southern UK operation for the then newly formed passive fire protection installer Checkmate Fire and worked for 26 years on numerous new build projects including The Channel Tunnel, The Millennium Dome and Eurostar St Pancras, whilst also actively involved in surveys and remedial work in hospitals, universities and other occupied buildings where life safety and business continuity is paramount. He was Managing Director of Checkmate between 2007 and 2013 and is currently in the process of leaving the company, having recently joined emergency evacuation systems company, TagEvac, as their Business Development and Compliance Manager. Alan has championed the cause of fire compliant buildings for many years to ensure that the evacuation strategy, when called upon, will actually work.

Fire event speaker Peter Blandon

Peter Blandon who is the Quality and Technical manager for FirePro UK has had over 30 years as a expert in active fire detection and specialist suppression fire suppression systems. Peter has worked for a variety of fire alarm specialist some big, some not so big on various projects, mainly in Central London but also up and down the length of the country. Peter has engineered a number of systems for fire risks within NHS premises ranging from HV/LV room protection for Chelsea and Westminster NHS trust to waste chute collection fire protection at Addenbrooks NHS Trust as well as many others.  Besides his direct experience in NHS premises, Peter has also worked on a number of Fire detection/suppression projects for O2, Eurostar, McLaren, and various power generation facilities.
