With the growth in patient numbers, their changing needs, the continued development of treatments and programs, the expected funding shortfall and the focus on best use of resources, as defined in the 44 STP’s for England and through the Carter and Naylor Reviews, effective planning is vital in identifying requirements and achieving success.

Planning must address issues caused by proposed changes, engaging with stakeholders, staff, patients and the public to ensure that concerns are properly addressed.

In recognition of this, the IHEEM Architecture and Design of the Built Environment (ADBE) Technical Platform will be presenting a ‘Master Planning’ seminar on 04 May in London.

Clinical Journey from Master Planning to Build

Dr Manju Patel PhD MA (Distinction) MBA (Healthcare Construction) FIHEEM, Programme Manager / Project Director Physical Infrastructure Projects at NHS Grampian and Chair of the IHEEM Architecture and Design of the Built Environment Technical Platform (ADBE TP)

Clinical led capital developments, centred on patients and their needs are regularly cited on service specification and briefs but how many developments at post project evaluation demonstrate that this stepped journey did indeed take place; was pivotal to the design output and clinicians led the way from start to finish, and you have the scars to proof it?

In this session, Manju hopes to provide and share some “real” work experience where clinicians worked in partnership with University Colleagues to develop a Master Plan based on a journey from bench to bed. The journey tells the tale of all the trips and eye-opening events, experienced along the way.

12.10 – 12.40

Why Use BIM for Master Planning?

Steve Batson RIBA MIHEEM - Healthcare Director at Stephen George +Partners LLP, Director and Trustee of IHEEM and Vice Chair of the BIM4Health Group

To navigate and masterplan change, how can BIM help capture the healthcare estate to ensure that the patient journey and pathway is delivered in the right place, in the right space at the right time?

Can BIM help create a health information model of a built environment from the wider health economy, to each provider, to each department to an individual room?

In this session, I will use case studies to explore how capturing information of the built environment in existing estate and in refurnished and new build projects can provide real value in master planning.

12.40 – 13.40

Design Quality – Myth or Reality

Paul Mercer BA(Hons), BArch(Hons) RIBA FIHEEM, Director of Tangram Architects Ltd

The built environment for all types of facility has changed radically even within living memory and the drive for improvement is unstoppable. We try daily and make things better in the healthcare world – with the added dimensions of cost pressures and seemingly unrealistically short timescales. Sadly, twas ever thus. So here is the triangle of competing tensions – time, cost and quality – for which we need a resolution for every new project. There is often not enough time or cash – why is this? And the missing component – quality – is always expected but seldom given a spotlight, rarely defined and in many cases, is difficult to pin down. The mythology surrounding Design Quality is a labyrinth of theories and ideas but, as designers, we are expected to deliver high quality solutions. How do we define our aspirations? Who do we share these with? How do we know when we have achieved high quality design in a finished project? In this session, we will explore design quality principles, the tensions which give us the challenges to quality design, tools and techniques to help designers and client teams, and some propositions regarding future thinking.

14.20 – 14.50

BLM Budget – An Opportunity to Redesign & Future Proof

Dr Manju Patel PhD MA (Distinction) MBA (Healthcare Construction) FIHEEM, Programme Manager / Project Director Physical Infrastructure Projects at NHS Grampian and Chair of the IHEEM Architecture and Design of the Built Environment Technical Platform (ADBE TP)

Much of our NHS Estates is old and generally in poor condition. Most were never designed to support 21st Century healthcare and are in desperate need of modernisation. Departments are not co-located for efficiency and the buildings no longer lend themselves to the implementation of modern models of care without significant refurbishment.

In this session, Manju provides innovative ways of using back log maintenance budget to take the opportunity to redesign and future proof existing Estates.
