Fire safety, cyber security, proton beam and more

Last month we celebrated the 70th anniversary of the NHS which was founded by Welshman Aneurin Bevan in 1948 who grew up in south Wales. It is here, that this month the IHEEM 2018 Regional Conference and Exhibition will be held.

Now in its third year, the IHEEM 2018 Regional Conference and Exhibition, 'IHEEM 2018', has grown and this year will extend over two days on 30-31 August at the impressive City Hall in Cardiff. The events features a panel of over 20 experts speakers from across the healthcare estates sector who will challenge delegates to consider ‘How to keep the patient safe in your hospital?’

Fire Safety in healthcare estates

Last year’s Grenfell Tower tragedy has seen a renewed focus on fire safety and the potential implications for the healthcare sector. Key aspects will be discussed in four sessions:

Cyber-attacks on the NHS

In 2017 the NHS suffered a cyber-attack by the WannaCry ransomware, which affected services across the UK. The future threat of cyber-attacks presents a tough challenge for the NHS and wider healthcare sector to address. Two sessions will look at cyber security and also the impact on business continuity:

Proton Beam therapy

Last month the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust reached a key milestone in the construction of its Proton Beam Therapy Centre, with the delivery of the cyclotron. In this session, Proton Beam technology, its clinical benefits, and the engineering, design, and construction challenges of building and equipping the new facility will be discussed by the team involved.

Theatre ventilation and cleanroom design and operation

Does controlled air reduce the post-operative infection? What are the requirements for cleanroom design? And should we be replacing or removing hand basins in clinical areas?

Infection control and compliance

Having appropriate infection control processes in place is key to maintain patient safety. This session will explore two processes to managing compliance and infection control risks.

Hospital design for coastal areas

Hospitals located in coastal areas are subject to challenges presented by the marine environment such as corrosion. It is therefore key to consider the hospital design and materials used.

Using BIM on a live project in Wales

Building Information Modelling (BIM) can help drive the design, coordination, manufacturing and delivery of large construction projects. This session provides an update on the use of BIM for the largest capital project in Wales.

NHS Estates & Facilities Guidance

CELEBRATING 75 YEARS OF IHEEM

IHEEM 2018 takes place the same week as IHEEM celebrates its 75th anniversary, having been founded on 28 August 1943. To mark this special occasion, there will be a black-tie and evening dress formal dinner held on the evening of 30 August at the five-star St David’s Hotel on the waterfront in Cardiff Bay. The evening will feature complimentary drinks on arrival followed by a three course dinner during which there will be a series of short speeches including ‘IHEEM’s Charity of the Year’ the Portsmouth Hospitals Charity. Professor David Perrett will lead discussions on ‘Who has done more for health – doctors, scientists or engineers?’. A former ‘rugby star turned sports commentator’ will be the special after dinner speaker which will announced shortly.
