Welcome to our New CEO

Pete Sellars (pictured), former head of Profession and director of the NHS Estates and Facilities Division at the Department of Health, and the Institute’s President from 2016-2018, has been appointed as out new CEO.

Well-known for significantly raising the profile of the healthcare engineering/healthcare estates management profession in Government, and for his close collaboration with Lord Carter on the Labour Peer’s NHS Productivity and Efficiency Programme, Pete Sellars is a passionate advocate of apprenticeships, who began his own career as an apprentice, and on joining the NHS, saw IHEEM as his ‘natural home’. As head of Profession at the DH, he worked tirelessly to draw to Ministers’ and senior civil servants’ attention the profession’s key role in the safe, efficient operation of healthcare facilities, argued for estates professionals to have a ‘place at the top table’, and was a vociferous advocate for additional funding to improve and upgrade an often ageing and ‘tired’ estate.

A Chartered Engineer, he held a variety of roles at national, strategic, and operational levels at the DH, and, alongside his work with Lord Carter, led the development and introduction of important national programmes including the NHS Premises Assurance Model, ProCure21+, SHAPE, and PLACE.

During his two-year IHEEM Presidency, he championed goals including strengthening links with other professional bodies and the education sector, recruitment, looking after members, and improving diversity and equality.
