The works will provide a range of improvements to promote safety, privacy, dignity, and therapeutic care for patients and staff. Improvements include a new seclusion suite designed to meet current regulatory standards, Equality Act requirements, and best-practice guidance. This forms part of a wider package of improvements, including a secure drop-off and collection area to improve patient transfers and admissions. Private garden areas for patients using the facilities will be created, providing access to outdoor space in a safe and calming environment.
The MacArthur Centre provides specialist psychiatric intensive care services for patients requiring short-term treatment in a secure and highly supportive environment.
The refurbishment programme will ensure the service continues to meet the needs of patients now and in the future while providing facilities that are fit for purpose, compliant with regulatory requirements and aligned with the Trust’s long-term commitment to improving mental health services. The new facilities are anticipated to welcome patients in early 2027, with subsequent refurbishment phases continuing through spring and summer 2027.
