The new building, located at the entrance to BD’s 100 acre Roborough site, will house the charity’s local fleet of motorcycles and cars in a secure setting when not in use. BD will also cover all utility and security costs for the site.
By giving South West Blood Bikes a permanent base in Plymouth, the initiative will enable faster dispatch of vehicles, wider service coverage, and reduced reliance on paid courier services. This will help deliver critical medical items such as blood, pathology samples, medicines and donor breast milk more quickly, at no cost to the NHS.
Since its launch, South West Blood Bikes has completed more than 14,000 jobs and transported nearly 83,500 consignments.
Steve Dower, chairman and trustee of South West Blood Bikes, said: “The provision of a purpose-built facility to support our Plymouth-based operations represents an incredibly significant and meaningful contribution from Becton Dickinson. This support will directly enhance our ability to serve the people of West Devon and further our charitable aims.”
The partnership also includes ongoing financial support, awareness campaigns, and volunteering opportunities for BD employees, strengthening links between the company, local hospitals, and community healthcare services.
The facility was officially unveiled on Friday 26 September with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by local MP Fred Thomas, Plymouth City Council officials, NHS Blood & Transplant, and representatives from Derriford Hospital.
