Job Title: Relief Porter

Overview

  • To move patients in wheelchairs and on beds/trolleys between departments in accordance with correct manual handling and escort procedures.
  • Assistance when requested in the physical transfer of patients in accordance with correct patient handling techniques.
  • To ensure the safe delivery of pharmacy drugs to clinical areas. This will include tracking of and responsibility for controlled drugs.
  • To drive Trust vehicles, including non-emergency ambulances and 3.5-tonne vans.
  • To ensure all vehicles are cleaned and maintained, checking and reporting all defects accordingly.
  • To respond to all emergency calls including fire, cardiac arrest, major incident, assistance in dealing with difficult patients and baby abduction.
  • To undertake any other duties requires by the Supervisor and Manager for which adequate training has been given.

Formal Qualifications, education & training required

  • Maths, English GSCE at Grade D or above
  • Must hold a current driving licence and experience of driving vans up to 3.5 tonnes.

Essential skills and competencies

  • Computer Literate, including internet and email usage.
  • Ability to relay factual and accurate information verbally and in writing
  • Accurate data input skill

Desirable skills and competencies

None

Essential experience

  • Experience in working to deadlines, schedules and prioritising workloads.
  • Previous Portering experience and working shifts.
  • Previous experience of dealing with customers.
  • Experience of working as part of a team.
  • Experience in driving vans up to 3.5 tonne

Job Title: Non Patient Handling Porter

Overview

  • To provide a Portering service for the Trust in accordance with agreed policies and procedures.
  • The Portering department is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, staff will work a variety of shift patterns.
  • To be responsible for the movement and correct disposal of all waste and dirty laundry from wards and departments in accordance with current procedures and legislation. Waste will include domestic, infectious, offensive, cytotoxic, sharps and human tissue.
  • To provide a postal service to all departments within the Trust. Delivery and collection of the outgoing and internal post along with parcels and recorded delivery items. Sorting all mail in a timely fashion.
  • To drive Trust vehicles including 3.5-tonne vans. To ensure all vehicles are cleaned and maintained, checking and reporting all defects accordingly.
  • Staff will be required to undertake a generic and flexible approach to their work in order that we maintain an effective, reliable and cost-effective service. This approach will help support the team in times of absence and/or increased workloads and demand.

Job Title: Portering Supervisor

Overview

  • To provide supervisory duties for the portering services across the Trust.
  • Day to day allocations of workloads. Manage rotas, sickness, training and bulk cylinder medical gases.
  • Provide support to the Portering Services Manager and deputise in their absence.
  • To assist with fire calls, crash calls and any other emergency response calls, and coordinate the department during such incidents.
  • To implement and control major incident procedures for the department until the manager takes over.
  • To undertake any other duties requested by the Portering Services Manager.

  • Supervisory related qualification.

Job Title: Portering Co-ordinator

Overview

  • Liaising with the Portering & Security Supervisors to ensure there is a consistent approach by the department to all tasks. Ensure that communication between shifts is of a high standard and that all ad-hoc tasks are completed.
  • To monitor service level agreements, compliance to Policies & Procedures and performance of the department, keeping adequate records to complete audit and KPI reports.
  • To co-ordinate, monitor, develop and train the operational portering & security team as they undertake all routine, scheduled and ad-hoc tasks on a day to day basis. To ensure staff have adequate training and systems managed, to reduce the risk of incident or breaches in security, investigate and recommend changes when incidents occur.
  • In addition to portering and security duties, it is necessary to be prepared to perform vital support roles to aid the smooth running of the hospital. Staff require adequate knowledge to attend to all reasonable, non-clinical, requests for support and assistance.
  • An understanding of all portering and security jobs is required.

  • Ability to instruct Manual Handling, Medical Gases.

Overview

  • To manage the Trust’s portering and reactive security services.

  • Ensuring that the services are efficient and that manpower resources are efficiently managed to address the business needs of the hospitals within agreed operational budgets.

Formal Qualifications, education & training required

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience in general, waste or hospitality management

  • Certificate in Control & Restraint / Confilct Resolution (BTEC or equivalent)

  • Evidence of continuing professional development

Essential Skills and competencies

  • Demonstrate experience of working within the portering, security and waste management functions

  • Understanding of NHS strategy, legislation and policy in relation to waste management

  • Knowledge of administration systems and databases including office applications

  • Understanding and operational experience of risk

  • Sound knowledge of budget and resource management

  • Operational experience of data collection, analysis and identifying corrective actions

  • Experience in dealing with challenging situations where diplomacy is required including dealing with complaints

  • Experience in managing staff

Desirable skills and competencies

  • Operational experience of budget and resource management

  • Experience of working in an acute hospital setting

  • Experience in developing and writing business plans and reports to support projects

Essential experience

  • Possess the ability to work to tight deadlines, including the assessment and prioritisation of tasks/workload

  • Well-developed analytical skills to aid sound decision making
