Job Title: Gardener

Overview

  • To ensure the grounds and gardens at Trust premises are maintained to a high standard.
  • Provide all areas of care for plants and shrubs including trees in a competent manner with the ability to dig, fork, hoe and plant.
  • Carry out basic maintenance of hand and mechanical tools/machinery e.g. cleaning and lubricating.
  • Use tractor and mower or trailer for grass cutting and the transporting of materials and equipment.
  • Carry out cleaning of ice/snow during periods of inclement weather and be part of a call-out team when required.

Formal Qualifications, education & training required

  • General education
  • Basic principles of horticulture
  • Duke of Edinburgh or similar award scheme

Essential skills and competencies

  • Health and Safety at Work Act
  • Knowledge of risk assessments
  • Use of Horticultural machinery

Desirable skills and competencies

  • Committed to Health & Safety
  • Self-motivated

Essential experience

  • Work of outdoor nature, (Horticultural or Rural)
  • Part-time employment or voluntary work (Horticultural or Rural)

Job Title: Head Gardener

Overview

  • To ensure the grounds and gardens at Trust premises are maintained to a high standard.
  • To ensure members of staff carry out their duties in a safe and responsible manner and to see that the work is maintained to a high standard.
  • Organise daily work schedules, record timesheets, work record sheets, holiday schedules and transfer information to P.C.
  • To be available for audit reports/Health and Safety, accident/untoward occurrence reports.
  • Provide all areas of care for plants and shrubs including trees in a competent manner with the ability to dig, fork, hoe and plant.
  • Carry out basic maintenance of hand and mechanical tools/machinery e.g. cleaning and lubricating.
  • Use tractor and mower or trailer for grass cutting and the transporting of materials and equipment.
  • Carry out cleaning of ice/snow during periods of inclement weather and be part of a call out team when required.

Salary

£19K-£20K

Formal Qualifications, education & training required

  • NCH (National certificate in Horticulture) or; City & Guilds Stage 2, Amenity Horticulture.
  • City & Guilds Stage 2, Horticultural Machinery or Equivalent.
  • N.P.T.C Chainsaw & related operations – CS30, CS31 & SC 32.
  • N.P.T.C Certificate of competence in use of Pesticides – PA1, PA6.

Essential skills and competencies

  • Health and Safety at Work Act
  • Understand the principles of supervisory management
  • Understand the principles of risk assessment
  • Maintenance and repair of Horticultural
  • Machinery Electric arc or oxy/acetylene gas welding

Essential experience

  • Participation in specialist Health Service training
  • Participation in cross-trade training
  • Prepared to share skills and knowledge with other team members
