The two-storey CDC is due to open in spring 2027 and will play a vital role in improving access to health services, reducing waiting times across the region by providing more than 120,000 extra health checks each year. It will include an eight-room endoscopy suite and offer X-rays, CT and MRI scans, blood tests, and other health checks.
The new CDC is being developed on the former site of The Place and Pitsea Library and has been designed to incorporate a key wellbeing hub and activity centre for the community. Alongside its diagnostic services, the new building will create a dedicated space for community groups, as well as providing a new library.
Structural modules have been factory-manufactured offsite while groundworks were underway and are being craned into position and installed to create the weatherproof structure ready for fit out and cladding.
Electrical and mechanical modules are also being manufactured offsite and factory-tested before delivery for assembly to accelerate the build, reduce costs and ensure quality.
The Pitsea project is a collaborative initiative between Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, Essex County Council, and Basildon Council.

Once open, the centre will make it faster and easier for people to access vital tests at a time that’s convenient for them and without long journeys. We can already see then benefits that our Thurrock and Southend centres are bringing to the local community and we know this will be another step forward for our patients.”
