The Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust said: “The GMMTH is a facility for the people of Greater Manchester that will significantly enhance the care major trauma patients receive. It is located on the Salford Royal site, and due to open to patients and visitors this October. The new trauma hospital will support the approach to major trauma in Greater Manchester – a partnership with Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, North West Ambulance Service, North West Air Ambulance, and the Greater Manchester Integrated Care Board, which will ensure that patients from across Greater Manchester get the right care in the right place.”
The Trust continued: “The GMMTH will make it possible for people who have suffered a major trauma to be quickly brought to one place, which has the right teams of clinicians with the right skills, facilities, technology, and equipment, to help them. This also means clinical teams can be brought to the patient – rather than the patient having to be moved around the hospital site to multiple locations.”
The hospital will house 90 new inpatient beds, five new theatres, including the new state-of-the-art RAPTOR (resuscitation with angiography, percutaneous techniques and operative repair) theatre, the UK’s first hybrid major trauma theatre, and other new facilities including treatment rooms, scanning, and X-ray areas. The building also features a helipad (see photo), allowing trauma patients to receive even faster access to highly specialised, life-saving treatment.
The new facility will allow clinical teams to also support in the recovery of trauma patients by providing them with three 24-bed wards including an enhanced care unit, enabling trauma patients to access essential recovery services in one location – including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, psychological support, and nutrition and hydration assistance.”
The Trust said: “While there is still work to be done to make the building fully operational – including familiarising and training the teams who will work there, and moving furniture and equipment in, it has been an excellent time to share the progress so far with colleagues from across Greater Manchester. Most recently we welcomed our colleagues from the Greater Manchester Integrated Care Board, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, and Salford City Council, to view the patient pathway through the hospital, starting from the helipad deck, scanning areas, theatres, and resuscitation unit, to the recovery area and patient wards. Other visits have included our Northwest Ambulance Service and Greater Manchester Police colleagues, Healthwatch representatives, our public governors. and former major trauma patients.”
The GMMTH is part of the Government’s New Hospital Programme.
