DDC’s UVMATIC water trap is helping to prevent outbreaks of infections in healthcare facilities, which uses UVC light to eliminate bacteria in wastewater pipes.
The device was showcased at three major UK events: IP2025 (Brighton), the Care Show Birmingham and Healthcare Estates (Manchester).
DDC sales director James Smith said: “Water traps are surprisingly some of the most contaminated and high-risk areas in hospitals.
“They’re increasingly recognised as potential vehicles for the transmission of multi-drug-resistant bacteria.”
The UVMATIC water rap reduces the build-up of bacteria and prevents the formation of thick, slimy biofilms inside water pipes.
“Biofilms can harbour a wide range of micro-organisms, including respiratory pathogens. If left unchecked, these biofilms can pose a real threat to the health of patients, clinicians and the public,” added James.
The UVC technology in DDC’s UVMATIC device targets biofilm formation by continuously irradiating the internal surfaces of the water trap. It destroys bacteria or limits their ability to form biofilms.
In Spring 2025 the UVMATIC water trap killed more than 99.9% of bacteria in a test at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. The bacteria count rose again after the device was switched off. UVMATIC Water Traps have now been installed in a ward where further clinical trials are currently under way.
