Formed over 20 years ago and now based in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, Stuart McCurry & Partners Ltd are a successful Mechanical and Electrical building services design consultancy.

At SMP we believe in an interdependent, rather than independent approach, working effectively with design and construction teams to deliver projects on time, within budget constraints and fulfilling or exceeding our clients’ aspirations.

We take pride in the fact that a large proportion of our business emanates from Clients returning, demonstrating the high level of working relationships and customer satisfaction which the company strives to achieve.

At SMP we encourage a high degree of internal staff involvement on each project, which enables us to develop and transfer knowledge gained through internal meetings and internal communication, thereby providing flexible, experienced and well briefed engineers to see the project through from start to finish.

SMP is committed to providing a broad, comprehensive and flexible service embracing new technologies. In essence, a full spectrum of specialist knowledge and skills are fully utilised on every project, large or small, to develop a unique and optimum solution.

SMP undertakes projects which vary in size from £5k to £20m, with our involvement ranging from advisory role through to contract administration.

Job description

This Electrical Design Engineer role is to join a busy, growing engineering consultancy, where you will be part of a close-knit team of engineers working on a range of sectors including education, retail, healthcare and commercial. It’s a team of conscientious engineers who have created a friendly supportive working environment, where you’ll feel at home from day one. You will be work closely with both director and senior engineers to continue your career development As an Electrical Engineer, all aspects of your sectors of work should include: • Assisting senior design engineers with the preparation of outline design schemes • Visiting site during the construction phase to monitor progress • Working as part of a design team delivering detailed designs on a wide variety of projects • Assisting with the checking of documents and carrying out detailed electrical calculations • Learning the latest building regulations and technical standards • Undertaking duties as to obtain further experience and training in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering • Attending a range of project group and technical meetings • Advising clients and architects on energy use and conservation in a range of buildings and sites, aiming to minimise the environmental impact and reduce the carbon footprint • A capacity to develop further, sketch designs and design briefs dictated by either clients or engineering managers, within the firm and cost frames. • Ability to work within the Firm’s QA and other operational procedures. • A capacity for original thought, judgement and initiative • An understanding of critical awareness and innovation • Having responsibility for technical and financial decisions taken, including time management. These include choice of system, calculations, Buildability, organisation of works and development of projects, with the ability to comply with time restrictions and limits • Having responsibility towards technical and other staff, including trainees • Liaise with other disciplines, including mechanical. The Electrical Design Engineer within the practice will be expected to report to the Principal Design Engineer and Managing Director. This is an important role and forms the basis for Practice development. The Design Engineer will be expected to be competent, particularly in the following areas: • Have an understanding of the basic physics and design parameters associated with other disciplines.  Have a full and detailed understanding of the physics and design parameters on all aspects of electrical works, and be able to implement the designs, including energy assessment.  Be computer literate and able to prepare drawings on CAD.  Be BIM aware.  Managerial responsibility for the engineering design function, including project management, preparation of the design (including supervision) and costing.  Be computer literate and able to assist in the preparation of calculations on computer and ability to translate requirements to CAD Technicians.  Be proficient in the use of power design software (Amtech) and lighting design software (Relux or Dialux).  Responsibility for the design function, including liaising with other building disciplines, preparation of the design (including supervision) and costing.  Capable of undertaking services co-ordination across all disciplines to produce buildable designs.  Be competent in the exercise of independent technical judgement and application of engineering principles, including the application of Standards, Codes of Practice and Regulations.  Assist with development and initialisation of internal standards and evaluation and assessment of projects and failures.  Liaison with and application to Statutory Authorities for new building connections and upgrades to existing.  Undertake survey of a building a preparation of a Report on the Electrical aspects of the building, including capability and compliance with Codes of Practice and Regulations and energy evaluation. Other expectations of the Electrical Design Engineer which they would be expected to use are as follows:  Knowledgeable concerning standard office procedures and required quality of output, including the development of internal standards and procedures.  Able to work without supervision.  Multi-tasking.  Maintain a proactive attitude to maintaining output to programme and time management.  Actively pursue project and general administration.  Administration, including cost control, programmes and maintenance of quality.  Maintain client liaison and client confidence.  Project development and administration, including cost control, programmes and maintenance of quality.  Continue your professional development in all technical areas and your knowledge on changes in Standards and Regulations, energy efficiency and current developments.  Management of costs associated with projects both internally and externally.
