The milestone has been reached as Great British Energy (GBE) marks its first year. Building on this momentum, in May, GBE announced a further £25m of funding to support NHS Trusts to install solar panels and battery storage systems, building on the £130m investment delivered through the GBE and NHS solar scheme in 2025/26. The funding will help Trusts reduce energy costs that can be redirected into frontline care and increase on site generation and storage, while supporting NHS Net Zero ambitions.
Chris Gormley, chief sustainability officer at NHS England, said: “We’re extremely proud that 162 NHS sites have now completed their solar installations through the Great British Energy and NHS Solar Scheme. This is a major milestone in expanding clean energy generation across the NHS. Every pound saved on energy bills is a pound that can go back into patient care.
“A huge thank you and congratulations to colleagues across the country whose hard work has made these projects possible. I look forward to more projects completing over the coming months. Together, we’re building an NHS that is greener, more sustainable, and better placed to serve patients for years to come.”
